A new master plan for a health sciences campus
The UCI Health Sciences Campus Master Plan aims to create a truly comprehensive environment for the learning, practice and application of the medical sciences. The overall concept builds upon the existing framework of the Biomedical Research Center with new research lab buildings at either end of the existing pedestrian spine.
The plan proposes the continuation of this pedestrian system with a strong diagonal connection linking to a new academic core. The outpatient clinics and specialty hospital are placed along the site’s western edge, bringing the new face for the Health Sciences Campus to the main avenue. Several parking structures were arranged inboard, away from the public streets and adjacent to the service side of existing buildings.
The solution maximizes the new buildings' public exposure to the surrounding community while creating a pedestrian-friendly environment along the center green space called the Wellness Park. The design includes more than 1.1 million square feet of academic, research and medical service space, along with more than 3,000 parking stalls.
