Hoag Hospital Expansion

Irvine, California

Regional healthcare facility will be a green, walkable, health and wellness village

The expansion of Hoag’s existing Southern California hospital campus reimagines the modern healthcare facility to prioritize specialized care, connections to nature and a comprehensive patient experience. The master planned concept replaces the longstanding model of a centralized midrise hospital island surrounded by parking with a green, pedestrian-friendly campus that balances multiple low-scale buildings with meaningful open spaces and healing gardens.

The $1 billion expansion of the Sun Family Campus will include new state-of-the-art specialty care centers for surgical innovation, cancer, and digestive and women’s health, in addition to dedicated urgent care services for cancer patients. The six new buildings will house 155 inpatient beds, eight operating rooms, and 120,000 square feet of ambulatory facilities.

The expansion was developed around three core themes: elevating the patient experience, recruiting and retaining the nation’s brightest health care professionals, and defining and building the future of health. LPA’s integrated design team created a blend of buildings and landscape to leverage the local climate and allow patients, providers, and families to connect with their environment — both visually and physically. Natural daylight and views of the gardens are provided at all patient rooms, staff respite zones, family areas, and communal spaces. Outdoor spaces become integral parts of the continuum of care, available for dining, gathering, therapeutic movement, or quiet reflection and meditation.

The building materials further enhance the biophilic connection, with travertine stone and warm wood toned panels offering a natural complement to landscape planting. This “high-touch” material palette is contrasted with “high-tech” curtainwall glass and fiber cement panels that speak to the cutting-edge research and advanced care integral to hospital operations. The combination of technology and high-touch strategies support the facility’s larger mission to develop a true wellness village.
