New Lab Space Improves the Quality of Life for Lab Workers

The expansion of Catalent’s office and analytical laboratory doubled the square footage of the existing lab and provided much-needed social environments for the pharma and biotech product development and manufacturing company. Designers used a series of budget-conscious design moves to enhance flexibility, wellbeing and a sense of belonging for the scientific workforce.

Designers organized the renovation to seamlessly connect the new and old space and bring employees together. A new lounge connects office and laboratory staff, who are separated for much of the day. A large internal window puts the lab work on display. High quality finishes in the break room and lounge blend with the warmth of the exposed wood structure to encourage use and enhance the employee experience.

Workstations in the new lab space are oriented perpendicular to a large expanse of windows to allow natural light to reach every bench. Flexibility, efficiency and ergonomics drove the design of individualized workstations, which include adjustable and removable overhead shelving, knee space and easy access to shared utilities and instrumentation at each endcap. Connections between the new and existing lab, shared support rooms and a new gowning room maximize efficiency and enable collaboration.
