Palomar College Interdisciplinary Classroom Building
San Marcos, California
As the student population grows, Palomar College needed a space to house an array of programs, including physiology, anthropology, psychology, religious studies, sociology, multicultural studies, economics, political science and more.
The three-story, 110,000-square-foot Interdisciplinary Instructional Building meets the college’s needs for additional classroom, laboratory and study spaces, as well as faculty offices and support facilities. The building is centrally located between the two major pedestrian crossroads, creating an epicenter of campus activity. The eye-catching cantilevered stair announces the project from the quad and parking area while giving a clear view to the building’s circulation systems and the connection to the exterior courtyards beyond. With windows on two sides of many of the classrooms, natural daylight nicely fills the space, and the potential for distraction is minimized by state-of-the-art audiovisual technology and a creative use of color.
