UCSD Canyonview Recreation Center

This three-story 38,782 square foot new satellite student recreational facility will enhance the university’s existing Canyonview Recreation and Athletic Center. The existing facility houses both Athletic and Recreation Locker Rooms, and support spaces however the general student population and aquatics programs have outgrown the existing facility. The Canyonview expansion will support the two adjacent 50-meter pools, the home of the University Swimming, Diving and Water Polo programs. It also will serve as an asset for various student and staff recreation programs including a climbing center.

Located on the western edge of campus, the proposed building expansion will be a part of the gateway to University Center and will form many first impressions along this entry sequence. Embodied in the facility name, Canyonview, sits high along the UC San Diego Park canyon traversing to the north, offering spectacular views. Key project drivers and design goals include a welcoming approach and entry sequence, fitness/recreation on display, functional and innovative programming, capturing views, “canyon-views”, optimizing daylighting and energy performance, good steward of existing facilities and health and wellness focused.
