New athletic facility empowers student athletes

Sage Hill School’s new aquatic and tennis center provides a state-of-the-art venue for its student athletes to participate in competitive swimming, water polo and tennis. The facilities allow students to practice and compete at their home campus for the first time; before they were forced to use shared off-campus facilities.

The aquatic center consists of a 25-yard by 33-meter competition pool that accommodates both swimming and water polo teams. An associated support building houses a coach’s office, training room, locker rooms, restrooms and pool equipment storage. A trellised overlook along the building shades spectators during events. An adjacent existing building can be uses as a feature wall for sponsorships or accolades around the pool.

The tennis facility adds six post-tensioned tennis courts that terrace from east to west. Taking advantage of natural grade as it steps court to court, the design adds built-in spectator seating made with custom wood planking. Transition spaces between courts offer areas for team staging or a break from the competition. All courts feature high-performance sports lighting to support evening play.

Linking the two facilities, an entry plaza and festival lawn provide space for pre- and post-function activities and serve as a gateway to the core athletic buildings. Walkways connect to the main campus, for which LPA developed the 20-acre master plan and designed and permitted all build-out phases to date.
