New sports park fulfills community vision and promotes green practices

A long-standing vision of community leaders, the Brea Sports Park provides recreational facilities that serve the public while respecting the environment, especially stormwater management. The 27-acre sports park includes ball fields, paved courts, a concession stand and a community building that were shaped by community input.

The site was originally owned by a major oil company and still has active wells that produce oil. From the onset of the yearlong community input process, stakeholders made sustainability a top priority. Green components include permeable pavers in the main promenade, fully sub-drained fields and park management best practices. Constructed bioswales address storm water issues. To hide the existing oil wells, designers positioned batting cages as screening elements.

Organized into four quadrants, the park features dedicated adult and youth baseball fields, a softball field, a full-size soccer/football field, basketball courts, a multipurpose practice field and two overlay soccer fields. The project also includes a youth play area, passive park area and a walking trail that loops around the periphery. Adjacent to the concessions area, trees and planters define ample seating pockets with decorative benches.
