Campus Enhances the Concept of Community College Design

Join us as we celebrate the grand opening of the Coastline Community College District's Newport Beach campus: the Newport Beach Learning Center. In addition to the visually stunning exterior, the project is unique in that it suits an entire community college campus, in a single (three-story) building—3.9 acres versus 10.5 acres, from before, which leaves a smaller footprint. Underneath, is a stormwater management system that accommodates every drop of water—there is zero stormwater runoff, an important fact considering the center's ocean-close location.

There are unbelievable rooftop gardens, or vegetative roofs, that serve as the main social areas. The only "conditioned" spaces are classrooms and offices—everything else is cooled naturally, with ocean breezes. The Newport Beach Learning Center is on track to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold-level certification. LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies that achieve high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
