Santa Barbara City College Physical Education Building Replacement

Santa Barbara, California

The Santa Barbara City College Physical Education Replacement Building is designed as a four-story 77,187 square foot building that includes programmatic spaces for a NCAA gymnasium, multi-disciplinary classrooms, dance and exercise rooms, a fitness center, and staff and faculty offices. The project also includes athletics support spaces such as a training room, team lockers, equipment and uniform storage and laundry facilities. The building and the surrounding site development will provide spectacular ocean views and views of the College’s stadium, track and field from indoor and outdoor spaces.

The project is planned to be constructed on the side of a cliff to solve campus accessibility issues and maximize views to the ocean. The structure is designed out of cast-in-place concrete to protect the building from the marine environment and title surges. An elegant roof canopy will shade portions of the building with an integrated solar array that will generate an EUI of 7 with an 85% reduction in energy use over base line .

Proposed landscaping will be comprised exclusively of drought-tolerant native and Mediterranean species. No plants listed as invasive by the California Invasive Plant Council, or the Invasive Plan Inventory will be used. Existing reclaimed water irrigation systems will be retained and used for the new landscaping. Only minimal irrigation of the plantings would be required upon their establishment.
