LPA Design Director Franco Brown Earns National Design-Build Certification

The Design-Build Institute of American certifies Brown as an expert in design-build, an increasingly popular strategy for delivering large, complex projects

LPA Design Director Franco Brown has successfully completed the Design-Build Institute of America’s (DBIA) education and certification testing program to become a nationally recognized Design-Build Professional. DBIA’s comprehensive program requires six years of substantial, documented direct project experience in design-build project delivery to achieve certification.

Brown, a lead designer in the firm’s Irvine studio, has led the planning and design of more than 30 projects in the education, healthcare, corporate, and sport + recreation practices. He has 20 years of design-build project experience, including eight major higher-education projects, and he has written design-build criteria documents for an additional five.

His design-build work includes several public projects, such as the College of San Mateo Integrated Science Center, Woodland Police Station, Los Angeles Valley College Monarch Center and West Los Angeles College Allied Health Complex. He has also led the design of private progressive design-build projects including the Great Park Ice and Sport Complex.

“Franco’s certification as a Design-Build Professional represents years of training and applied expertise,” said LPA CEO Wendy Rogers. “His DBIA certification gives our clients and partners confidence that LPA has the experience, rigor and accountability in place to achieve successful design-build projects.”

Design-build is an increasingly popular method of project delivery, and it will account for as much as 47% of construction spending in non-residential construction by 2025, according to a DBIA study. Design-build creates a one-stop-shop for design, construction and pricing, which streamlines communication, accelerates project completion, increases collaboration and lowers costs.

Brown joins a growing cohort of design-build experts at LPA. In recent years the firm has increased its focus on design-build training and certification, and is planning to equip two additional design-build professionals with DBIA certification each year going forward.

“LPA is committed to helping our clients succeed with design-build,” said LPA Director of Higher Education Steven Flanagan. “That’s why we put in the time, effort and cost to train and certify our design-build leaders, and to maintain that certification through ongoing education.”

LPA earned its first design-build contract in 2003 and has since completed successful design-build projects for Los Angeles Unified School District, California State University, the County of Orange, and a number of community colleges. In addition, LPA has used progressive design-build, a modified version, on several private-sector projects, including hospitals and large corporate campuses.

DBIA Certification is the nation’s only measurable standard of an individual’s knowledge of the Design-Build Done Right® principles.
