LPA's Glaukos HQ Named ASCE OC's Sustainable Engineering Project of the Year

Integrated design approach yields seamless connectivity between indoor and outdoor environments to support a close-knit culture of innovation.

LPA’s civil engineering team was recently honored with the Sustainable Engineering Project of the Year Award by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Orange County Branch for their work on the Glaukos corporate headquarters in Aliso Viejo.

LPA’s civil engineers worked closely with landscape architects, architects, interior designers, and structural engineers to transform a cluster of 1990s-era buildings, surface parking and manicured lawns into a cohesive campus that links the ophthalmic medical technology firm’s existing offices with the natural surroundings, fostering an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation.

“This honor highlights the value of truly integrated design. Working together across disciplines resulted in a holistic, sustainable project that is not just functional, but inspiring.” — Kathereen Shinkai Director of Civil Engineering

The Sustainable Project of the Year award recognized LPA’s efforts to cut embodied carbon by repurposing space and materials. The existing shell and core of the 160,000-square-foot headquarters building was preserved rather than demolished. An outdoor area that was formerly a parking lot has been transformed into a functional, social environment. Soil excavated from the parking lot was used to create a flat events area, avoiding the cost and environmental impact of soil export.

“This honor highlights the value of truly integrated design,” said Director of Civil Engineering Kathereen Shinkai. “Working together across disciplines resulted in a holistic, sustainable project that is not just functional, but inspiring,”

Outdoor spaces on the campus are designed to bring employees together, promoting a sense of community and shared mission. The site features shade structures, fire pits, and reserved food truck parking, creating a university quad-like atmosphere. A covered media deck with an outdoor TV and lounge space offers a unique venue for relaxation and interaction.

To enhance the well-being of staff, a respite garden, visible from the lobby and workspaces, offers a place for passive restoration. A walking trail weaving through the campus leads to seating that overlook the canyon and provides a serene spot for private meetings.
