Trinity University Northrup Hall Renovation

San Antonio, Texas

A Center for Global Connections Emerges from a Black Box

Trinity University’s Center for International Engagement, hidden in the windowless basement of the University Library, is given a new light-filled home at a major crossroads on Trinity’s campus. Northrup Hall’s previous functions were limited to primarily executive and staff functions, despite it being the North-South link between the upper and lower campus. LPA and the University established goals to infuse student life and connections into the facility by introducing the Center for International Engagement and creating two classrooms of the future in a once dark, inaccessible suite at the building’s ground floor. New points of entry, the removal of a major “brick façade” and a celebration of international culture highlight this tactical renovation. This is the first of a three-part renovation that will see the entire facility given new life.
