Honor Elementary School
Converse, Texas
A prototype for future elementary school campuses
Honor Elementary School shepherds a new model for educational architecture in one of Texas’ fastest-growing school districts. Opened in August 2024, the pre-K-5 campus is the second iteration of a prototype refined through a post-occupancy evaluation (POE) from Tradition Elementary School. The design nurtures resiliency, imagination and collaboration, all while reducing timelines, streamlining cost estimating and promoting districtwide equity.
The school is organized like a windmill, with radiating wings surrounding a central library. There’s a two-story academic building and early childhood center, as well as a wing for the gym, cafeteria and art facilities, all of which are clustered by grade for ease of circulation and connection. Outdoor learning spaces, partially funded by Pre-K 4 SA — a City of San Antonio initiative aimed at delivering a new generation of early childhood learning settings — invite exploration. Two playgrounds, a multipurpose field and sports courts further enhance student life. In addition, the campus supports community access with multifunctional public spaces that are open beyond school hours.
Valuable lessons from the Tradition Elementary School POE informed updates that addressed usage, security, material selection, flexibility and more. The front canopy was redesigned to save on structural steel, and the rear stairs now have a privacy barrier. The library — which had an open perimeter with a large stair and mezzanine — was enclosed to improve safety and noise transfer. Collaboration areas, initially designed with underutilized fixed millwork islands and sinks, were reimagined for varying groups of learners with flexible furnishings.
From a performance standpoint, the school employs integrated passive strategies such as daylighting and shaded windows, along with native plantings, low-flow fixtures and regional materials, achieving a 60% reduction in pEUI.
