CSU San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus Student Center
Palm Desert, California
The CSU San Bernardino, Palm Desert Campus (PDC) is a vibrant, student-centered learning hub that fosters intellectual, environmental, economic, and cultural growth within the community.
In collaboration with PDC administrators and student leadership, LPA designers have envisioned a net-zero student center to support the campus’s rapid expansion.
“Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the design reflects the essence of the desert and canyon environment,” says Steve Flanagan, LPA’s Higher Education Director.
Planned as a flagship project, the two-story Palm Desert Campus Student Center will set the stage for the campus master plan’s future development. Positioned to shield students from harsh desert winds, the building frames a welcoming plaza anchored by a striking 50-foot clock tower at its entrance. A sunlight-filtering canopy will define the heart of campus life, providing both shade and an iconic presence. The plaza seamlessly connects to the new Palm Canyon Walk, integrating outdoor pathways and amphitheater seating to enhance the student experience.
Inside, the center will house essential student services and programs, including a wellness center, library resources, dining options, and multipurpose assembly spaces designed for both student and community use. A rooftop photovoltaic array will generate 100% of the facility’s energy, reinforcing the campus’s commitment to sustainability.
“The student center is designed to enrich the collegiate experience and fulfill students’ vision for a dynamic, 24/7 campus environment,” says Winston Bao, LPA’s Higher Education Programmer.
