LPA Design Studios’ design for the West Hollywood Aquatic and Recreation Center received an Honor Award for Health + Well Being from the Los Angeles chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC-LA) at the group’s 2022 Sustainable Innovation awards program.
The Sustainable Innovation Awards affirm a project team’s commitment to a sustainable built environment, exemplary performance and emphasis on energy and water savings, air quality, waste, good design, community engagement, education and equity.

The project earned praise from the judges for its “focus on triple bottom line sustainability, where human health and healthy communities are as important a focus as energy conservation.”
The four-story West Hollywood ARC provides a new center for social and recreational activity and created badly needed park space for the city’s 35,000 residents. The ARC includes a three-story outdoor grand stair which links the open space of the community park to raised observation and recreation decks and a rooftop aquatics center which connects to existing tennis courts. The facility promotes health and well-being by providing indoor and outdoor recreation and wellness spaces designed to meet the specific needs of the community, including a multi-purpose gym and outdoor recreations and yoga decks.
The design process for the ARC was always about creating a facility that reflected the community’s identity and diversity. Residents told us they wanted the new center to be a place for everyone, which really struck a chord with us.
“The design process for the ARC was always about creating a facility that reflected the community’s identity and diversity,” says LPA Design Director Rick D’Amato. “Residents told us they wanted the new center to be a place for everyone, which really struck a chord with us.”
The Sustainable Innovation Award adds to the ARC’s accumulation of design recognition. Earlier this year, the project received an Honor Award and COTE Honor Award from the American Institute of Architect (AIA) Orange County Chapter, a Los Angeles Business Council award, and an AIA Long Beach/South Beach Citation Award for unbuilt work.
