LPA Managing Director Samuel Lim Earns National Design-Build Certification

The Design-Build Institute of America certifies Lim as an expert in design-build, an increasingly popular strategy for delivering large, complex projects.

LPA Managing Director Samuel Lim has successfully completed the Design-Build Institute of America’s (DBIA) education and certification testing program to become a nationally recognized Design-Build Professional. DBIA’s comprehensive program requires substantial, documented, and direct project experience in design-build project delivery to achieve certification.

Lim, a Principal in LPA’s Irvine studio, has over a decade of experience working in design-build partnerships with contractors to deliver services as a unified project team. Throughout his 20-year career, he has been immersed within all aspects and phases of LPA’s largest and most complex projects, including campus utility and infrastructure improvements, state-of-the-art performing arts facilities, sequenced campus-wide enrichment programs and new, ground-up schools.

Sam’s certification as a Design-Build Professional represents years of training and experience. He joins a growing cohort of DBIA-certified professionals at LPA and his certification represents our commitment to being a great design-build partner.

The result of an extensive design-build process, the Swinerton/LPA-designed Theodore Roosevelt High School renovation/replacement will link the school’s past, present and future.

“Sam’s certification as a Design-Build Professional represents years of training and experience,” said LPA President and Chief Design Officer Keith Hempel. “He joins a growing cohort of DBIA-certified professionals at LPA and his certification represents our commitment to being a great design-build partner.”

Design-build is an increasingly popular method of project delivery, and it will account for as much as 47% of construction spending in non-residential construction by 2025, according to a DBIA study. Design-build creates a one-stop-shop for design, construction, and pricing, which streamlines communication, accelerates project completion, increases collaboration, and lowers costs.

LPA earned its first design-build contract in 2003 and has since completed successful design-build projects for the Los Angeles Unified School District, California State University, the County of Orange, and many community colleges. In addition, LPA has used progressive design-build, a modified version, on several private-sector projects, including hospitals and large corporate campuses.

DBIA Certification is the nation’s only measurable standard of an individual’s knowledge of the Design-Build Done Right® principles.
