LPA’s landscape architecture team was recently honored with four Merit Awards in the San Diego chapter of American Society of Landscape Architect’s Excellence in Design Awards. The 2022 LPA winners cover a wide variety of projects, including the Normandie Supportive Housing project in Los Angeles, Great Park Ice & Five Point Arena in Irvine, Kaiser Permanente Clairemont Mesa medical offices and High Bluff Ridge in San Diego.
The ASLA San Diego Excellence in Design Awards are the “ultimate recognition of design achievement for landscape architecture firms and projects in and outside of the San Diego region.”
The Normandie Supportive Housing project in Los Angeles, which was honored with the Merit Award in the Unbuilt Category, is a response to California’s “Homekey” program to create supportive housing for people experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. The design embraces modular units in a five-story building wrapping around a series of outdoor spaces.
“This is a very important type of project — the idea of providing supportive housing using modular, prefabricated units with access to outdoor environments,” an ASLA juror said.
The Great Park Ice & Five Point Arena, the training facility for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League, earned the Merit Award in the Commercial Category and was recognized as a space that combines the Southern California lifestyle with a modern ice sports complex. The site amenities building and community with planting design that supports an ecological approach to sustainability.
Four LPA Projects Honored At ASLA-SD Awards
This is a very important type of project — the idea of providing supportive housing using modular, prefabricated units with access to outdoor environments.
“This project seems very fun and engaging, and there is a lot of really nice attention to detail,” the ASLA jury said.
The revitalization of the Kaiser Permanente Clairemont Mesa medical offices includes an inviting indoor-outdoor public square that features native and adaptive landscapes that promote sustainability. The setting, which promotes calmness, wellness, and exercise, has become a hub for the community.
The project was honored with the Merit Award in the Institutional Category. The jury said, “the materiality of this project is appealing, and the plan palette is well representative of Southern California’s native landscape. The ample seating opportunities are appreciated and well designed.”
High Bluff Ridge was honored with a Merit Award in the Commercial Category. The project transformed underutilized outdoor areas into interconnected, multi-use spaces designed to promote interaction, wellness and productivity.
“The use of outdoor rooms on this project seems to be successful, creating a variety of attractive, intimate spaces for gathering. The attention to detail is noteworthy and the use of plant material created a very comfortable garden quality,” the jury said.
