Sharp Mesa Vista Psychiatric Care Unit Modernization
San Diego, California
The Sharp Mesa Vista Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit modernization project completely refreshed the north wing of the facility, creating a warm, welcoming and rejuvenating environment that redefines the preconceptions of a behavioral health hospital. Sharp HealthCare initially retained LPA to complete a feasibility study to address the need for improved patient care areas, replace outdated infrastructure and maximize the patient bed count. Upon award of the full design/build contract, all the tenant improvements were designed to achieve compliance with the new OSHPD-5 Acute Psychiatric Hospital code section.
Renovation enhancements included the creation of 28 large patient rooms, patient counseling and treatment areas, a nurse station expansion, reconfigured support areas, a spacious day room that looks out to a new healing garden, and an outdoor activity area with a new colorful motivational mural. The remodel of the unit also resulted in a new kitchen and dining space, all new interior finishes, and new exterior windows that provide for better natural light. The addition of new HVAC system infrastructure on the roof for improved supply and distribution also will serve to enhance the patient and staff experience.
The upgraded Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital will care for approximately 1,000 patients a year experiencing a mental health crisis, fulfilling a significant need for improved mental healthcare resources in San Diego.
