The park will provide much-needed recreation space for the growing city of Santa Clara
(SANTA CLARA, Calif.) August 30, 2018 — Construction starts today on the new Reed and Grant Sports Park, an 8.7-acre recreation space including five athletic fields, a playground and a multipurpose building. The project is designed by California-based LPA to meet the increasing demands for recreation space in the city and create a state-of-the-art community destination.
LPA worked closely with the City of Santa Clara after a study revealed a need for additional active recreation space for the growing community. Focused on the city’s goals, LPA started the design process by assisting the City in evaluating their programmatic needs, meeting with stakeholders and providing alternate design studies to help the usage of a new facility.
“We wanted the design of the sports park to serve the community’s needs,” says Arash Izadi, Associate Principal at LPA. “The Reed and Grant Sports Park development will allow sporting and community events to be integrated with the neighborhood, creating a safe, sustainably designed, easy-to-access environment for the community.”
The design fits five soccer fields—each a different size to accommodate different age groups—on a unique, wedge-shaped site in an industrial zone. Both synthetic and natural turf fields are included offering a mix of field types.
A 3,800-square-foot multipurpose building creates a main entry for the park, as well as space for other recreation activities, such as wrestling, karate and exercise classes. The community room doors roll up, creating large opening and a flexible, accessible indoor/outdoor connection.
Sustainable design strategies further add to the environmental techniques used throughout the project. Elements are incorporated to cut energy and water use and save operational costs for the city. The roof of the multipurpose building is designed to direct stormwater to retention areas and techniques to reduce water runoff will be implemented throughout the site. The entire facility will use efficient LED sports lighting powered by photovoltaic systems on the roof. Additionally, the parking lot will include 11 electric vehicle charging stalls.

The project is estimated to be complete in fall 2019.
