An August ceremony marked the start of construction on Menchaca Elementary School in Austin, Texas, the first project in a $1 billion Austin Independent School District bond project. The new 98,600-square-foot replacement campus will be built on the same site as the existing elementary school.
LPA designers, district members, faculty and community members came out for the event, as well as students who helped develop the locations of the future classrooms and commons building.
The new campus is scheduled to open in January 2020, with a capacity of 870 students, addressing the growth of this diverse city and the evolution of the district's strategic plan. The school is designed to LEED Silver standards and incorporates collaborative, exploratory learning spaces with a focus on mindfulness.
