LPA lighting designers earned three awards at the recent 2023 IES SoCal Illumination Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, including the program’s top honor, the Award of Excellence.
The IES awards recognize “professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design.” Recipients are chosen from members of the Los Angeles and Orange County sections of the Illumination Engineering Society.
LPA lighting designers Rebecca Ceballos and Tanya Flores received the Award of Excellence in outdoor lighting design for West Hollywood Aquatics and Recreation Center, a five-story facility that combines aquatics, recreation and community spaces. In illuminating the rooftop pool, designers balanced building structure, weight, wind loads and spacing limitations to provide uniform, television-quality optics and positioning.
LPA Earns Three Awards for Lighting Design
Debra Fox and Jen Ozai earned Awards of Merit in outdoor and interior lighting design for TIDE Academy, a STEAM-focused public high school in Silicon Valley. The exterior lighting organizes bright and dark spaces to create a glowing hub that beckons the community. The interior lighting supports a unique curriculum by creating a variety of warm and inviting, visually comfortable interior spaces revolving around a centrally located, glowing “oasis.”
“The lighting [for TIDE] creates a sense that the interior flows into the open plaza exterior, creating engagement with the surrounding community,” the jury said.
These honors from the IES represent perfectly why LPA is dedicated to the integrated design process. These lighting strategies work with the overall design to reduce energy use, improve how the building functions and enhance the human experience.
These are the latest in a series of local and national honors earned by LPA’s lighting team, a key element of LPA’s integrated design process which stresses the inclusion of all the different disciplines from the earliest project stages.
