John Hoenig leads LPA’s structural engineering practice in Texas, leveraging his 20+ years of experience guiding engineering teams across a wide range of higher education, civic, K-12, healthcare, science + technology and commercial projects. His experience with unique and challenging structural projects informs a client-focused approach that searches for elegant and cost-effective design solutions.
His approach is rooted in inter-disciplinary collaboration from the beginning of every project. He works closely with the client and architect to determine project goals, challenges and opportunities to craft the optimal structural approach. He brings a highly creative and technically savvy lens to the design team, working to heighten the aesthetic impact of each project while achieving functional excellence.
Before joining LPA in 2023, John led structural design on many notable Texas projects. His work on the AT&T Discovery District helped transform the south end of downtown Dallas into a public entertainment space. He was engineer of record on the state’s first LEED Platinum higher education project, the Student Services Building at the University of Texas at Dallas. His structural design for Dallas Independent School District’s Zan Wesley Holmes Jr. Middle School achieved widespread recognition for its contribution to the dramatic architectural design.
He is highly engaged in the structural engineering profession, always seeking to improve the processes and technologies that drive innovation in the industry. He has published articles in Structural Engineer Magazine and Modern Steel Construction, and presented at the Texas Society of Architects conference. His design work has earned awards from the Urban Land Institute, Engineering News-Record and the American Institute of Architects at the state and national level, as well as R&D Magazine’s Lab of the Year Award.
