When Less Is More

Bringing people back to the office … extending the brand … finding special moments in an efficient workplace. “Doing more with less” means different things for every workplace design.

Complex times require creative approaches. A workplace needs to serve more roles, do more. Budgets must be justified, employees engaged, deadlines met.

Everybody wants to “do more with less.” But how do
you get there?

LPA designers start with a different approach, a different way of looking at spaces and environments. Research guides a process that seeks to understand the people who will use the spaces. An integrated team — lighting designers, engineers, landscape architects — works together to find the detail that makes a difference. Every element is explored, as designers look for the answers that may not have been part of the original questions.

The ROI can take many forms. Making the budget work by saving in one area to find value in another. Or the use of color and light to bind teams and spur collaboration. Or the quiet spot that sparks inspiration.

Each project takes a different path. Each has its own priorities and emphasis. Every project represents an achievement of design over challenges, finding a route to advance the client’s unique goals and aspirations.

The budget was set. The company was happy to mimic another facility in development. But what could they do with the money? Smart decisions on finishings and lighting helped. Color, pattern, texture and graphics choices cost-efficiently reinforce the brand. Discussions focused on bridging the gap between offices and lab environments, moving beyond the tight budget to create a more regional approach that addresses bigger company goals

Sega

A longtime relationship culminates in a new challenge. The growing gaming icon wanted dense, efficient workspaces. Workspaces were left raw. There are almost no finished materials. Ceilings are open, with exposed concrete. Instead, designers focused on infusing the brand into the workplace. Lighting and graphics designers worked closely with the interior designers to put the brand at the forefront, throughout the facility

Toyo Tires

One tire company: three separate, distinct brands. Working within the square footage and a mandate to build as little as possible, the design consolidates the work, meeting and R & D spaces, creating an array of shared environments. Going deeper, the new headquarters defines a company that operates as three identities under one umbrella.

Existing offices were the framework, the starting point. Limited demolition. Limited new construction. To conserve and maximize, “reuse” became the mantra. Ceiling systems were reused. Existing offices were updated and repurposed. Shared and social spaces were reconsidered and adapted to the company’s needs. A light touch fits the company’s vibe.
