Inside LBJ Early College High School’s New Athletics Facility
LPA Associate Michelyn Smith was featured on KVUE, where she gave a behind-the-scenes look into Lyndon B. Johnson Early College High School’s new athletics facilities. The project, which is currently underway in Austin, will provide sustainably designed modern updates for the 1970s-era campus. Funded as part of an Austin Independent School District $2.4 billion bond package, it will include a competition gym, practice gym, wrestling room, locker room and weight room.
The competition gym will seat approximately 1,700 people, while the practice gym will hold up to 650. Bleachers on three sides will provide a place for the community to gather in support of the LBJ Jaguars. The weight room, which features artificial turf both inside and outside, will be located near the tennis courts and football field for intuitive wayfinding and easy access for student athletes and coaches.
As Smith detailed in the news segment, “When we were siting [the complex], it was important for the campus and the community that it connected all of our pieces and became the new heart.”
