For Bethel AME Church of San Diego, an under-utilized urban site is being delivered into a three-story permanent supportive housing project for previously unhoused veterans and seniors. The project was developed in conjunction with Yes in God’s Back Yard (YIGBY), a nonprofit group focused on developing affordable housing on church-owned property in San Diego. (LPA Director of Mixed-Use Matt Winter has served on the advisory board.) The design includes 26 1-bedroom apartments, secure communal amenity spaces, a dog run, a roof deck and a front porch to connect the development with the neighborhood.
Sneak Peek: Energy Efficient Supportive Housing
The integrated high-performance design is focused on efficient floor plans, passive natural ventilation and daylighting. A centralized VRF system and all-electric boiler system for domestic hot water reduce energy use and promote carbon neutrality. Site design promotes biodiversity with an adaptive landscape palette specific to pollinator species.
