Sonoma State University Recreation Center
This 53,000-square-foot, two-story student recreation center was first building on the Sonoma State University campus to use the LEED rating system as a guideline for design. The facility houses two gyms, a suspended indoor running track, a 40-foot climbing wall, weight and cardiovascular training areas, as well as yoga, aerobics and exercise rooms. In addition, the facility houses staff offices, conference rooms, testing and wellness service facilities.
Nearly 70 percent of the building is naturally ventilated and cooled. An indirect evaporative cooling system is used for the office, multipurpose and fitness rooms. Along with proper orientation and an efficient exterior skin, this building performs 51 percent better Title 24 standards. In addition green materials were used in the carpet, linoleum, solid surface transaction counters, recycled glass tile and wood from certified forests.
