Polytechnic High School Auditorium Renovation
Long Beach, California
This project consisted of the seismic retrofit, accessibility and fire life safety upgrades to the existing 34,000 square foot auditorium building, as well as, the renovation of the interior finishes, electrical infrastructure, light fixtures, plumbing, mechanical and sprinkler systems. The building was built in 1930 and reconstructed in 1934 in an Art Deco style after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. A historical consultant hired by the district evaluated the significant historical features of the building.
Modernization of the functional aspects of the theater included the removal of a narrow balcony and main house floor to improve accessible seating distribution throughout the main house. The new house design improved supervision of the space, acoustics properties and audience sight lines. New seating was provided at the floor of the main house and the existing 1930’s seats were refurbished and located at the stadium seating section of the house.
