Nimitz Middle School

San Antonio, Texas

Opened in 1961, Nimitz Middle School had not seen a major renovation in its 54-year history. LPA was asked to create a new entry and reimagine the identity of the campus by replacing and consolidating the central plant for increased efficiency. Key design elements include creating academic space for the STEM—science, technology, engineering and math—magnet program serving grades six through eight, a new exterior courtyard, a new athletics facility, classrooms, library, administration and associated central plant upgrades. The design also required the integration of these new additions on the site’s sloping topography.

Historical elements are found throughout the design promoting the rich history of Admiral Nimitz and his command during World War II—in essence turning the building itself into a teaching opportunity. The project is a profound change to the campus and its place in the community.
