Hawthorne Elementary School

Riverside, California

Located along historic Victoria Avenue, this new 59,677-square-foot, K-6 school encompasses nine acres and houses 750 students. A covered walkway acts as a central spine around which the campus is organized. Significant events are etched into the concrete pavement along the spine, embodying the philosophy that learning occurs both inside and outside the classroom. The architectural vernacular employs familiar agrarian forms cast in modern materials, creating a campus that respects its surroundings, yet signals to the future.
